Professional Consultation

What is professional consultation?

Professional consultation is paid, scheduled time with a colleague who has specialized knowledge you want to learn from. Consultation is a professional-to-professional service focused on clinical insight, skill development, and expanded perspective; not therapy or supervision.

During consultation, you bring questions, cases, or areas of uncertainty related to your work. The consultant offers expertise, feedback, and guidance grounded in their training and professional knowledge. COnsultation is collaborative and non-evaluative.

Consultation is ideal for professionals who want to:

  • Build competence in specific clinical areas or populations

  • Consult on complex cases or themes

  • Gain perspective without supervisory authority or hierarchy

  • Access affirming, ethics-informed professional support

Consultees retain full responsibility for your clinical decisions and practices. Consultation supports your growth; it does not direct or manage your work.

Consultation vs. Supervision: What is the difference?

Professtional Consultation

  • Peer-based, collaborative relationship

  • No evaluative or gatekeeping role

  • No authority over your license or employment

  • Focuses on insight, learning, and perspective

  • Consultant does not assume responsibility for your work

  • OPtional and self-directed

Supervision

  • Professional licensure requirements

  • Hierarchical relationship

  • Evaluative and oversight-based

  • May be required for licensure or employment

  • Focuses on competency, compliance, and readiness

  • Supervisor shares responsibility for clinical work

  • Often mandatory or structured

Consultation is NOT a substitute for supervision and does not meet licensure or employer supervision requirements. It is an additional professional resource for clinicians who want thoughtful, affirming, experience-based support without power dynamics.
